This figure, from Veilleux and Miller, p8, shows the edge-on spiral NGC 4013 observed with the TTF. Emission of the halo gas is detected in Hα (top) and [NII] (middle). The [NII]/Hα excitation map (lower plot) shows that the ionised halo gas is highly structured. It was perhaps with a sense of incredulity that most of us received the news of the devastation of Mt Stromlo. In the days that followed, and as the full scale of the losses became apparent, no doubt many of us also put ourselves in the shoes of our colleagues in Canberra wondering what we would do if a similar event befell us. I believe that we can only hope that we could have responded as magnificently as the RSAA Director and her staff. The inspirational story of 'Black Saturday' and the ongoing recovery recounted by Penny Sackett in this newsletter should serve not only as a timely reminder of the natural dangers that many Observatories face, but also as an example of the indomitable spirit and close cooperation that are hallmarks of the astronomical and broader academic community. The knowledge that the entire astronomical community is 100 per cent behind Penny and her staff, coupled with the tangible help given by many organisations, has clearly been an important factor in their recovery. The AAO itself remains committed to help the recovery program in any way possible. The strong sense of cooperation within the Australian astronomical community was also underscored by the recent visit of the Australian Federal Minister for Science, the Hon Peter McGauran, to Narrabri, Siding Spring and Parkes. The visit highlighted the international profile of Australian astronomy; built on a cohesive and strategic community and the existing strong and productive international collaborations, including the Anglo-Australian Observatory and the Gemini telescopes. Indeed, during the visit the Minister announced the award …

Extraplanar Emission-line Gas in Edge-on Spiral Galaxies. Ii. Optical Spectroscopy
The results from deep long-slit spectroscopy of nine edge-on spiral galaxies with known extraplanar line emission are reported. Emission from Hα, [N II]λλ6548, 6583, and [S II]λλ6716, 6731 is detected out to heights of a few kpc in all of these galaxies. Several other fainter diagnostic lines such as [O I] λ6300, [O III] λλ4959, 5007, and He I λ5876 are also detected over a smaller scale. The r...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملStellar abundance gradients in galactic disks. I. Method and spectral line gradients
We describe the technique of absorption line imaging of galaxy disks using the Taurus Tunable Filter on the Anglo-Australian Telescope and demonstrate its sensitivity to the behaviour of spectral features associated with Mg and Fe. Radial profiles of Mg2 and Fe5270 line-strengths are presented for a sample of eight face-on spiral galaxies spanning a range of Hubble types. Signatures of phenomen...
متن کاملEmission Line Ratios and Variations in Temperature and Ionization State in the Diffuse Ionized Gas of Five Edge–on Galaxies
We present spectroscopic observations of ionized gas in the disk–halo regions of five edge–on galaxies, covering a wavelength range from [O II] λ3727Å to [S II] λ6716.4Å. The inclusion of the [O II] emission provides additional constraints on the properties of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), in particular, the origin of the observed spatial variations in the line intensity ratios. We have derive...
متن کاملA Search for Extraplanar Dust in Nearby Edge-On Spirals
We present high resolution (0. ′′6 to ∼ 1. ′′0) BV images of 12 edge-on spiral galaxies observed with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. These images were obtained to search for extraplanar (|z| > 0.4 kpc) absorbing dust structures similar to those previously found in NGC 891 (Howk & Savage 1997). Many of these galaxies have been previously searched for diffuse ionized gas at high z. Our imaged galaxies...
